Safe Mercury Filling Removal in Fort Lee, NJ, Done the SMART Way
Concerned about your old silver fillings? Dr. Jonathan Odinsky follows the IAOMT Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, with rubber dam isolation, high-volume suction, protective barriers and a clean air supply, then replaces each filling with a biocompatible, mercury-free restoration.
Why You’re Here
You Have Silver Fillings and You Want Them Out Carefully
Silver fillings are not really silver. Dental amalgam is roughly half mercury by weight, bound with other metals. Many patients decide they would rather not keep that in their mouth long-term, or a functional medicine provider has suggested addressing it.
The removal itself is the part that deserves care. Drilling out amalgam without protections can release mercury vapor and particles. That is exactly why the SMART protocol exists, and why certification matters more than a dentist simply saying they are mercury-free.
Dr. Odinsky completed the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology’s SMART training and follows the full protocol on every amalgam removal at Infinity Dental Wellness. Read about our SMART certification.

The SMART Protocol
Every Safeguard, Every Time, on Every Mercury Filling We Remove
SMART is not one technique. It is a coordinated set of protections that work together to keep mercury away from you, our team and the environment during removal.
Isolation
A rubber dam isolates the tooth so particles and vapor cannot enter the rest of your mouth.
Clean Air for You
You breathe through a separate, clean air source and wear protective coverings for your eyes, skin and clothing.
Capture at the Source
High-volume suction and air filtration pull particles and vapor away the moment they are created.
Cool, Sectioned Removal
The filling is cut into larger pieces under cool water rather than ground into dust, which limits vapor.
Protected Team
Dr. Odinsky and assistants wear filtered masks and protective gowns designed for this procedure.
Responsible Disposal
Mercury waste is captured by an amalgam separator and disposed of properly, not rinsed into the water supply.
What to Expect
What Replaces Your Mercury Fillings, and How the Visit Goes
- A consultation first. We review your health goals, look at each existing filling, and talk through options. There is no pressure and no need to do everything at once.
- A written plan. Which fillings, in what order, and which material replaces each one.
- Biocompatible restorations. Tooth-colored composite fillings for smaller restorations, ceramic inlays, onlays or crowns for larger ones. Both bond to the tooth, which amalgam never did.
- Comfort throughout. The Wand for gentle numbing, headphones, and nitrous oxide if you would like it.
- Clear aftercare. Simple instructions and a team that is easy to reach if questions come up.

Common Questions
Mercury Filling Removal Questions, Answered
How much does safe mercury filling removal cost in Fort Lee, NJ?
The cost is the cost of the replacement restoration, a composite filling or a ceramic inlay, onlay or crown, plus the protections built into the visit. It varies with the size and number of fillings, so we give you a written estimate after your consultation. We work with select insurance plans and offer CareCredit and Cherry financing. See financing and insurance details.
What does SMART certified mean?
SMART stands for Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, a protocol developed by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology. Certified dentists have completed the IAOMT’s training in the protocol and follow its safeguards during removal. Read more about our certification.
Is it safe to remove mercury fillings?
With the right protections, removal is designed to keep exposure to a minimum for you and for our team. That is the entire purpose of the SMART protocol. Removing amalgam without isolation, suction and clean air is the scenario the protocol was written to avoid.
Do I have to replace all of my silver fillings at once?
No. Many patients replace them over several visits, often starting with fillings that are already cracked, worn or leaking. We map out an order together and you set the pace.
What material replaces the amalgam?
Tooth-colored composite for most fillings, and ceramic for larger restorations. Both are metal-free and bond to the tooth. If you have known material sensitivities, tell us at your consultation and we will talk through options.
Will mercury removal treat a health condition?
We do not make that claim. Patients choose removal to reduce a known exposure and to replace aging fillings with biocompatible materials. Any questions about a specific health condition belong with your physician, and we are glad to coordinate with them.
