OralDNA Pathogen Testing in Fort Lee, NJ: See What a Visual Exam Cannot

What It Is

What Is OralDNA Pathogen Testing?

Picture your mouth as a garden. A glance tells you whether things look healthy. It cannot tell you what is growing in the soil. OralDNA testing lets us look at the soil.

It is a non-invasive saliva test that reads the DNA of the bacteria living in your mouth. Instead of guessing which microbes are behind bleeding gums, persistent bad breath or bone loss, the lab identifies the specific species present and at what levels, sometimes before symptoms appear.

For a practice that cares about root causes, that is a meaningful step. It tells us the why behind what we are seeing, so treatment can be targeted and conservative. Explore our biological approach.

Simple & Comfortable

How OralDNA Testing Works

There are no needles and no scraping. For most patients the whole collection takes a few minutes during a regular visit.

  1. A Saliva Sample

You swish a small amount of saline and provide the sample in our office. That is the entire collection.

  2. Lab Analysis

The sample goes to OralDNA Labs, where DNA technology identifies the specific bacteria present and their levels.

  3. Your Personalized Plan

Within days, Dr. Odinsky reviews the results with you and tailors gum treatment and prevention to what your test actually shows.

What Your Saliva Can Tell Us

  • The specific bacteria present. The test identifies the type and level of bacteria associated with gum disease, so treatment can target what is actually there.
  • Your inherited tendency. Certain genetic markers may indicate an increased inherited tendency toward gum inflammation, which helps us decide how proactive to be.
  • A baseline to track. Repeating the test over time may show how your mouth is responding to care, so your plan can be adjusted rather than guessed at.

The Mouth-Body Connection

Why This Matters Beyond Your Mouth

Your mouth is the front door to the rest of your body. The bacteria and inflammation involved in gum disease have been associated in research with conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and complications in pregnancy. Knowing which bacteria are present is one thoughtful way to care for your whole health, not only your teeth.

It also lets us be more precise and more conservative. Targeted periodontal care, often supported by ozone therapy, can focus on the organisms that matter, and where appropriate lean less on broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Results are explained in plain language, and if it helps, we share them with your physician or functional medicine provider.

Common Questions

OralDNA Testing Questions, Answered

How much does OralDNA testing cost in Fort Lee, NJ?

The test is a modest lab fee added to your visit, and we tell you the exact amount before collecting the sample. Some insurance plans do not cover salivary testing, so we treat it as an elective diagnostic. We offer CareCredit and Cherry financing for larger treatment plans. See financing and insurance details.

What does the OralDNA test look for?

The MyPerioPath test measures the type and quantity of bacteria known to be associated with periodontal disease. A companion test, MyPerioID, looks at genetic markers associated with an increased inherited tendency toward gum inflammation. Dr. Odinsky will recommend which test fits your situation.

Does the test hurt?

No. You swish a small amount of saline solution and provide the sample in a collection tube. It takes about a minute and there is no scraping or needle.

How long do results take?

Typically within a few days to about a week. We review the report with you at a follow-up visit or by phone and explain what it means for your plan.

Will I need to repeat the test?

Sometimes. Repeating the test after periodontal treatment may show whether bacterial levels have dropped, which helps us adjust your maintenance schedule. That is a decision we make together based on your results.

Do I need to be a current patient?

No. New patients are welcome. Salivary testing is usually discussed as part of a comprehensive first visit. Call (201) 592-6222 or use the form above to schedule.
