Metal-Free Dental Crowns in Fort Lee, NJ: Strong, Natural and Nothing Your Body Objects To
A crown should protect the tooth without adding a metal you would rather not carry. At Infinity Dental Wellness, every crown is all-ceramic, zirconia or porcelain, with no metal core, no gray line at the gum, and a shade matched to your own teeth. Dr. Jonathan Odinsky is an Associate Fellow of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and trained in biomimetic, tooth-preserving restoration.
Why You’re Here
You Need a Crown, and You Want to Know What It Is Made Of
Many crowns placed over the past few decades are porcelain fused to a metal core. They work, but the metal shows as a dark line at the gum as tissue recedes, and some patients react to the alloys or simply prefer not to have metal in their mouth long-term.
Metal-free crowns solve both problems. Zirconia and lithium-disilicate porcelain are strong enough for back teeth, translucent enough for front teeth, and biocompatible, which matters if you have sensitivities or follow a low-toxin lifestyle.
At Infinity Dental Wellness a crown is also the last resort, not the first. Where a tooth can be saved with a biomimetic restoration or a ceramic inlay or onlay, Dr. Odinsky will tell you.

Is a Metal-Free Crown Right for You?
Patients Choose Metal-Free Crowns in Fort Lee When They Have
- A cracked, broken or heavily filled tooth that needs full coverage
- An old metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal crown with a gray line showing at the gum
- A known metal sensitivity or a preference for biocompatible materials
- A tooth that has had a root canal and needs protection
- A front tooth where the crown has to be invisible
- A ceramic implant that needs a matching metal-free crown
Materials & Methods
The Metal-Free Crown Materials We Use, and When
- Zirconia. A ceramic strong enough for molars and grinders, milled from a single block so there is no metal substructure to show through or corrode.
- Layered porcelain and lithium disilicate. The most lifelike translucency for front teeth and premolars, matched shade by shade to your neighbors.
- Conservative preparation. Modern ceramics bond to the tooth, so Dr. Odinsky removes less structure than an old metal crown required. Read about our biomimetic approach.
- Digital scanning and 3D planning. Impressions without goop, and low-dose digital imaging to check the root and bone before the tooth is crowned.
- Disinfected before sealing. The prepared tooth may be treated with ozone to reduce bacteria before the crown is bonded.
- Mercury-free from the start. If an old amalgam filling sits under the crown, it is removed under SMART protocols first.
Side by Side
Metal-Free Crowns Compared to Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal
Both restore a broken tooth. They age very differently.
| What matters | Porcelain fused to metal | Zirconia or all-porcelain |
|---|---|---|
| Metal in the mouth | Alloy core, sometimes nickel-containing | None |
| Gumline over time | Dark line appears as gums recede | Stays tooth-colored at the margin |
| Appearance | Opaque, can look flat | Translucent, reflects light like enamel |
| Tooth removed for the crown | More, to make room for two layers | Less, because ceramic bonds to the tooth |
| Sensitivity concerns | Possible metal reactions | Biocompatible ceramic |
| Strength on back teeth | High | High with zirconia |
What to Expect
Getting a Metal-Free Crown at Infinity Dental Wellness
- Exam and imaging. Dr. Odinsky checks the tooth, root and bone with low-dose imaging and confirms a crown is the right call rather than a smaller restoration.
- Preparation. The tooth is shaped conservatively, any old amalgam is removed under SMART protections, and the surface may be treated with ozone.
- Digital impression. A scan, not a tray of putty, captures the shape. A temporary protects the tooth while the crown is made.
- Seating. The finished zirconia or porcelain crown is checked for fit, bite and shade, then bonded in place.
- Comfort throughout. The Wand for gentle numbing, headphones, and nitrous oxide if you want it.

Common Questions
Metal-Free Crown Questions, Answered
How much does a metal-free crown cost in Fort Lee, NJ?
A zirconia or porcelain crown is priced in the same range as a conventional crown at most offices, and we give you a written estimate after the exam. We work with select dental insurance plans, which usually cover part of a crown, and offer CareCredit and Cherry financing. Members of our Dental Wellness Plan receive 20% off restorative treatment. See financing and insurance details.
Are zirconia crowns as strong as metal crowns?
Yes, for everyday chewing. Zirconia is one of the strongest dental ceramics and is routinely used on molars, including for patients who grind. Dr. Odinsky chooses zirconia for back teeth and layered porcelain where translucency matters most.
Can you replace my old metal crown with a metal-free one?
Yes. The old crown is removed, the tooth underneath is checked and cleaned, any amalgam is taken out under SMART protocols, and a new ceramic crown is made. Many patients do this because of a gray line at the gum or a metal sensitivity.
How long does a metal-free crown last?
With good home care and regular visits, ceramic crowns are designed to last many years. Because they bond to the tooth and have no metal to corrode, the margin tends to stay sealed and tooth-colored over time.
Do I always need a crown, or is there a smaller option?
Not always. If enough healthy tooth remains, a bonded inlay or onlay or a biomimetic restoration may protect the tooth while keeping more of it. That is the first thing we look at.
Do I need to be a current patient?
No. New patients are welcome, including second opinions on a recommended crown. Call (201) 592-6222 or use the form above to schedule.
