Radiation-Free Cavity Detection in Fort Lee, NJ, With DEXIS CariVu

Why It Matters

The Earlier We See a Cavity, the Less We Have to Do About It

A cavity caught as a small shadow between two teeth can often be managed with ozone, remineralization and monitoring. The same cavity caught a year later may need a filling, and a year after that, a crown. Early detection is the most conservative treatment there is.

Traditional X-rays are excellent, but they can miss early decay between teeth and small cracks, and some patients prefer to limit imaging that uses radiation. CariVu fills that gap with light instead.

At Infinity Dental Wellness it works alongside low-dose digital X-rays, so Dr. Odinsky can see the full picture while using the least radiation possible.

How It Works

Transillumination: Seeing Through the Tooth With Light

CariVu is a handheld device that uses patented near-infrared transillumination. There is nothing to bite on and nothing to swallow.

  1. Light In

The tip rests gently around the tooth and shines near-infrared light through it, the same kind of light used in a TV remote.

  2. Contrast

Healthy enamel lets the light pass and appears transparent. Decay and cracks absorb it and appear dark.

  3. Image on Screen

A camera captures the image instantly. You see exactly what Dr. Odinsky sees, with no radiation involved.

What to Expect

CariVu Is Part of Every Careful Exam Here

CariVu takes seconds per tooth and is used during your regular exam, so there is no separate appointment and nothing extra to prepare for. If a shadow shows up, Dr. Odinsky explains what it means and what the conservative options are, on screen, before any decision is made.

Where a small area of early decay is found, we may recommend ozone and remineralization with nano-hydroxyapatite and monitor it at your next visit. Where a restoration is needed, we use biomimetic, tooth-preserving techniques and metal-free materials.

It all comes back to the same idea: see clearly, treat gently, keep as much of your natural tooth as possible.

Common Questions

CariVu Questions, Answered

Does CariVu cost extra in Fort Lee, NJ?

No. CariVu is part of how we examine teeth at Infinity Dental Wellness, not a separately billed service. Your exam and any treatment are estimated in writing before you commit. See financing and insurance details.

Is CariVu safe?

Yes. CariVu uses near-infrared light, which is non-ionizing. There is no radiation, which is why it is appropriate for children, pregnant patients and anyone who wants to limit X-rays.

Does CariVu replace X-rays?

No. CariVu is excellent at surfacing early decay between teeth and cracks. Digital X-rays show bone, roots and what is happening under existing restorations. We use both and let each do what it does best, which usually means fewer X-rays over time.

Does it hurt?

Not at all. The tip rests around the tooth for a few seconds. There is no pressure, no bite wing and nothing to swallow.

What happens if CariVu finds early decay?

Dr. Odinsky shows you the image and explains the options. Very early lesions can often be treated with ozone and remineralization and then monitored. If a restoration is needed, we use conservative, metal-free techniques that keep as much natural tooth as possible.

Can I request CariVu as a new patient?

Yes. It is part of a comprehensive first exam. Call (201) 592-6222 or use the form above to schedule.
