Why It Matters

Radiation-Aware Imaging for Patients Who Ask About It

If you have ever asked a dentist whether an X-ray was really necessary, you are our kind of patient. The answer at Infinity Dental Wellness is that we image when it changes a decision, we use the lowest effective dose, and we pair X-rays with radiation-free tools whenever they can do the job.

Digital sensors need a fraction of the exposure of film, produce a sharper image instantly, and let Dr. Odinsky enlarge, enhance and compare images over time. Radiation-free CariVu imaging handles early decay between teeth, so X-rays can be spaced out.

The goal is not to avoid information. It is to get the right information with the least exposure.

What Imaging Finds

Digital X-Rays and 3D Imaging Let Us Find

  • Decay between teeth and under old fillings before it reaches the nerve
  • Bone loss from gum disease that a visual exam cannot measure
  • Infection at the root of a tooth, including teeth that do not hurt yet
  • Cracks, cysts and impacted teeth
  • Exact bone volume, nerve position and sinus anatomy for implant planning
  • Jaw joint and airway structures relevant to TMJ and breathing concerns

What We Use

Three Ways We See, Each Used Only When It Earns Its Place

Different questions need different images. Here is what each tool is for at our Fort Lee office.

  1. Digital X-Rays

Small sensors capture bitewing and periapical images with up to 90% less radiation than film. Instant, sharp and easy to compare visit to visit. Used for decay between teeth, bone levels and root health.

  2. 3D Cone Beam Imaging

A low-dose CBCT scan builds a three-dimensional view of teeth, bone, nerves, sinuses and airway. Used for implant planning, evaluating root infections and complex cases, not for routine checkups.

  3. CariVu and Intraoral Cameras

Radiation-free near-infrared light for early decay and cracks, and small cameras that show you exactly what we see. Used at every exam so X-rays can be spaced out.

ImagingRadiationWhen we use it
Digital bitewing X-raysVery low, up to 90% less than filmPeriodic decay and bone checks, spaced to your risk
3D cone beam (CBCT)Low dose, more than a single X-rayImplants, suspected root infection, surgical planning, TMJ or airway evaluation

Intraoral cameraNoneEvery exam, so you can see the tooth yourself

What to Expect

Imaging at Infinity Dental Wellness Is Quick, Explained and Never Automatic

Digital X-rays take seconds. A 3D scan takes under a minute while you stand still. Every image is shown to you on screen, explained in plain language, and kept in your record so we can compare over time.

How often you need X-rays depends on your cavity history, gum health and existing restorations, not a calendar. Many healthy patients go longer between bitewings here because CariVu covers the early decay check without any dose at all.

If you are pregnant or prefer to minimize imaging, tell us. We will explain what we can safely defer and what we recommend doing now. See the rest of our dental technology.

Common Questions

Digital X-Ray Questions, Answered

How much do dental X-rays cost in Fort Lee, NJ?

Routine digital X-rays are usually included with a comprehensive exam and are covered by most dental insurance plans at regular intervals. A 3D cone beam scan is billed separately and is only recommended when it changes the plan, such as before an implant. We give you the cost before any imaging. See financing and insurance details.

How much radiation is in a digital dental X-ray?

Very little. Digital sensors use up to 90% less radiation than traditional film. A set of bitewing X-rays is a small fraction of the natural background radiation you receive in a normal day-to-day life, and we use a lead apron and thyroid collar as a matter of course.

Are digital X-rays safe during pregnancy?

Routine X-rays can usually be deferred during pregnancy, and we will do so unless there is an urgent reason to image. Radiation-free CariVu still lets us check for early decay. Tell us if you are or may be pregnant and we will plan around it.

How often will I need X-rays?

It depends on your risk. Patients with no recent decay, healthy gums and few restorations may go longer between bitewings, especially since CariVu covers early decay checks with no dose. Patients with active disease may need them more often. We decide with you, not by default.

What is a cone beam CT and do I need one?

A cone beam CT is a low-dose 3D scan of your teeth, jaw and surrounding structures. Most patients never need one for routine care. We recommend it for implant planning, suspected root infections, complex extractions, and some TMJ or airway evaluations, where a flat image is not enough to plan safely.

Can you use X-rays from my previous dentist?

Yes. If you have recent images, ask your previous office to send them and we will use them wherever they are diagnostic, which may mean fewer new images at your first visit. Call (201) 592-6222 or use the form above to schedule.
